Between history and innovation
The work on the Leonardo Campus was carried out with a view to enhancing its historical aspects. The Rectorate, the oldest building of the Politecnico, was renovated. The grounds of the Rectorate, instead, were completely redesigned, transforming the parking areas and paved areas into liveable green areas which were then renamed the “Giardini di Leonardo” (Leonardo’s Gardens), marking the 500th anniversary in 2019 of the death of Leonardo da Vinci (who died in 1519 in Amboise, France). At the same time, new structures were designed and built in the name of innovation: Made in Polimi, an exhibition space with a modern design, and the Domus Politecnica, a space where teachers and students alike can work and do other things together. Other important projects included the construction of the new Lerici building and the redevelopment of Building 4, both of which now house the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
These works bear witness to the Politecnico di Milano's commitment to combining historical memory and innovation, the identity of places and contemporary perspectives, and devising and creating environments that can meet the needs of the student, academic and urban community.
