MSc in Mechanical Engineering

The Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano is an advanced academic program designed to train engineers capable of designing, modeling, and managing complex mechanical systems in high-technology industrial contexts. The program combines strong scientific foundations with specialized competencies and allows students to build a personalized study path through a structure organized into Pre-Approved Study Plans (PSPA), grouped into three main areas: Core Mechanical Competencies, Mechanical Applications, and Cross-cutting Applications.

The Core Mechanical Competencies area includes the following tracks:

  • Digital Technologies for Product Development, focused on integrating advanced digital tools to accelerate and optimize product development;
  • Material Design and Processing for Industrial Engineering, dedicated to the design and processing of advanced materials for industrial applications;
  • Computational Mechanical Design, centered on numerical modeling and advanced simulation for high-technology mechanical design problems;
  • Manufacturing Engineering, oriented toward the design and optimization of manufacturing processes;
  • Production Engineering, dedicated to the management and optimization of production systems, with a focus on operational efficiency and resource integration; and
  • Data Science for Industrial Engineering, which integrates data analysis methods and quantitative tools for industrial engineering.

The Mechanical Applications area includes:

  • Automotive and Motorsport Engineering, dedicated to the design, modeling, and control of vehicles for high-performance applications;
  • Marine Engineering, focused on technologies and systems for the naval and offshore sectors, addressing design, energy efficiency, safety, and sustainability of maritime infrastructures;
  • Railway Engineering, providing advanced competencies for the design, analysis, and management of modern railway systems, integrating structural, energy, and operational aspects;
  • Mechatronics and Robotics, combining mechanics, electronics, and control to develop intelligent robotic systems, including collaborative robots capable of interacting safely and effectively with humans;
  • Mechatronics for Manufacturing (at the Piacenza Campus), centered on the automation of machine tools and production systems for precision mechanical industries; and
  • Smart and Sustainable Industry (at the Lecco Campus), focused on the digital transformation of manufacturing within the Industry 5.0 paradigm, with particular attention to production flexibility, sustainability, and the integration of people, processes, and digital technologies.

The Cross-cutting Applications area includes:

  • Propulsion and Power, dedicated to the study and design of propulsion systems and thermodynamic energy conversion processes;
  • Defence and Security, focused on the development and integration of high-technology systems for defense and security applications;
  • Bioinspired Engineering, integrating biological principles and engineering to design innovative solutions, with applications ranging from robotics to advanced materials and life sciences;
  • Micro and Nano Systems, oriented toward the design, modeling, and manufacturing of devices and systems at the micro- and nanoscale; and
  • Sports Engineering (at the Lecco Campus), applying mechanical engineering and biomechanics principles to the sports sector, with the aim of improving equipment performance, optimizing athlete-device interaction, and enhancing safety and efficiency.

Thanks to this broad and well-structured organization, the Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering offers a flexible and interdisciplinary education, enabling students to develop a highly qualified professional profile aligned with the digital, energy, and sustainability transformations reshaping industry and contemporary society.

Admission to the Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering is reserved for candidates holding a Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent university qualification obtained from an Italian university, with adequate preparation in the fundamental and core subjects of industrial and mechanical engineering.

Admission is subject to verification of curricular requirements and to an assessment of the candidate’s academic preparation by a dedicated Committee appointed by the Board of the Study Program. The evaluation is based on an analysis of the applicant’s academic record, with particular reference to the coherence of the previous study path, the weighted average of exam grades, and the possession of a certification attesting knowledge of the English language in accordance with University regulations.

For graduates of Politecnico di Milano, minimum weighted average thresholds are established for automatic admission, differentiated according to the Bachelor’s Degree program completed. For graduates from other Italian universities, admission is subject to obtaining a weighted average not lower than the minimum threshold set by the Regulations and to a subsequent individual evaluation by the Committee.

In cases where the previous academic path is not fully aligned with the reference curriculum, the Committee may conduct an overall assessment of the preparation acquired, also taking into account any documented evidence of excellence.

For full details regarding specific requirements and admission thresholds, please refer to Section 6 of the Study Program Regulations.

Applicants holding a foreign qualification equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree (Bachelor of Science or comparable title), valid in the country where it was awarded, may apply for admission. An adequate academic background consistent with the educational objectives of the Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required, with particular reference to fundamental mathematics and physics and to the core areas of industrial and mechanical engineering.

Admission is subject to verification of the eligibility of the degree and to an evaluation of the applicant’s academic record by a dedicated Committee appointed by the Board of the Study Program. The Committee assesses the curriculum of previous studies, academic performance, the coherence of the educational background, and any additional elements that may demonstrate the adequacy of the candidate’s preparation.

Applicants must also meet the University’s language requirements, in particular with regard to English proficiency, according to the procedures established by Politecnico di Milano.

For full details on specific requirements and admission procedures, please refer to Section 6 of the Study Program Regulations.

The Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano aims to provide advanced education in the design, modeling, analysis, and management of complex mechanical systems, combining strong scientific foundations with specialized engineering expertise and state-of-the-art methodological tools. The program trains engineers capable of understanding and governing complex physical phenomena, developing accurate mathematical and numerical models, designing high-performance components and systems, and integrating mechanical solutions with digital, electronic, energy, and materials technologies.

The common core of the program consolidates competencies in the fundamental disciplines of mechanical engineering. These are complemented by advanced tools in computational modeling, data analysis, control, optimization, and product and process development, enabling students to address complex problems with a quantitative and systems-oriented approach.

A distinctive feature of the program is its strong focus on industrial innovation processes and digital transformation. Advanced manufacturing, automation and mechatronics, the integration of design and production, process and product sustainability, and the use of data within industrial systems are central themes of the curriculum.

The program also develops specific expertise in application areas such as mobility, energy and propulsion systems, robotics and mechatronic systems, technologies for smart industry, and emerging high-technology integrated applications. Significant emphasis is placed on project-based activities, advanced laboratories, and the Master’s thesis, which allow students to integrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills in research or technological development projects, often in collaboration with companies and research centers.

Overall, these educational objectives are designed to prepare professionals capable of making a meaningful contribution to product and process innovation, to the energy and digital transition of industry, and to the development of sustainable, high-performance solutions, operating with scientific rigor, interdisciplinary vision, and responsibility toward the technological and environmental challenges of the coming decades.
