The idea

A green and sustainable campus

The Politecnico di Milano set up the Durando Campus in the Bovisa district in 1993, converting a former industrial site into the seat of civil architecture and design. The area presented numerous problems, both structural, due to the age of the buildings, and in terms of urban planning and liveability, due to the presence of large parking areas, to the detriment of spaces intended for study and conviviality. For this reason, the outdoor areas were radically rethought with a view to increasing the green area and the number of trees, expanding the pedestrian zones and introducing bicycle areas and bodies of water. More study stations were also set up as part of the 'Polycubo' project.

All the road surfaces on the Campus were made water-absorbent in line with the new dictates of contemporary conscious design.

The work radically transformed the look of the connecting spaces, making them not only more modern and sustainable, but also much more welcoming and functional for students. The new design emphasises the importance of greenery and open spaces, improving the quality of life on campus and promoting a healthier and more stimulating environment for studying and socialising.
