AI REDGIO 5.0: AI-at-the-edge for Industry 5.0
The European project AI REDGIO 5.0, funded by Horizon Europe and coordinated by the Manufacturing Group of the Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering of the Politecnico di Milano, has come to an end, promoting the adoption of “AI-at-the-edge” systems in industrial environments.
Launched in 2023, the project involved 45 partners from 18 European countries, aiming to strengthen industrial competitiveness through interregional cooperation, in line with the Vanguard Initiative principles. Activities focused on implementing artificial intelligence solutions deployed directly on machines and production systems, enabling real-time data processing with improved responsiveness and reliability compared to cloud-based architectures.
At the same time, the project promoted a human-centric approach to manufacturing, aligned with Industry 5.0 principles, contributing to the design of safer, more ergonomic and sustainable working environments. Experimental activities at the Politecnico di Milano were carried out at the Marco Garetti Laboratory, where advanced technologies supported the validation of human-centred production solutions.
AI REDGIO 5.0 also fostered the development of two complementary networks: one composed of European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs), supporting SME innovation, and another linked to Testing and Experimentation Facilities (TEFs), dedicated to pre-competitive experimentation.
In addition to research activities, the project delivered tools and methodologies for policymakers and industrial stakeholders, including the METODIH framework for EDIH management, an updated 6P maturity model aligned with Industry 5.0, and training programmes for upskilling and reskilling in manufacturing.
AI REDGIO 5.0 represents a further step towards integrating artificial intelligence into European industrial systems, supporting more innovative, sustainable and human-centred production models.
