Description

Prof. Mario Rinke from University of Antwerp and Prof Alessandro Tellini from ETH Zurich, will join Prof Ornella Iuorio and Prof Fulvio Re Cecconi from POLIMI for the full duration of the workshop. Workshop draft Program is: 1 July 2024 Day dedicated to the principles of circular economy applied to the world of architecture and engineering. Case studies and best practices will be discussed and analyzed. 2 July 2024 Day dedicated to the design of a temporary structure starting from a series of elements, materials and components that will be made available, and which derive from the disposal of other construction sites. 3 July 2024 Day dedicated to the design of the construction details for the temporary structure which will have been defined collaboratively during the first two days. The details will have to be developed taking into account the manufacturing technologies available to the Polytechnic. 4 & 5 July 2024 Two days dedicated to the fabrication of the planned work. This will include the definition and remodeling of the elements, materials and components made available, and the creation of the connection systems. 5 & 6 July 2024 Construction of the temporary structure near the area where the Summer School will be held.

Educational project

The use of sustainable construction materials is crucial for a more sustainable future. Reusing existing materials is at the core of circular construction and is fundamental to our future architecture. As availability-based design leads to a wider notion of materiality, we need to explore how to understand different forms, develop connections, and arrange components and spaces. This 1-week design and build workshop is aimed at exploring the possibilities of reusing building materials. Participants will be provided with a given set of components and asked to analyze and discuss their technical and architectural properties, as well as possible modes of connection. They will then develop design proposals for a small structure that will serve as a temporary meeting place on the campus of the Politecnico di Milano. This pavilion will act as both a social hub and a demonstrator of circularity. In the final phase of the workshop, the group will construct the chosen design.

Requirements

The event is open to students from Italian and foreign countries studying Architecture, Architectural Engineering, and Structural Design as well as to Doctoral students upon registration. Participants will be selected on the basis of their CV and motivation statement which they must produce when requesting registration. The event will be held in person. The official language of the event is English.
