Description of the initiative
Toronto, Canada.
The Brookfield Sustainability Institute at the George Brown College of Toronto will host students, faculty, and industry experts from across the globe in an intensive summer charrette that aims to develop projects that reflect on the design transitions due to the climate crisis.
In the charrette, a collaborative and creative process, students will be divided into interdisciplinary teams to experiment and develop design solutions on specific themes (e.g. A new project for the linear city; Emergency response design; Accessible low-rise building; Radical reuse; Future of workspaces; etc.). To each project specific sustainable strategies will be assigned (e.g. circular economy, nature-based solutions, etc.) to develop a highly innovative and climate-sensitive design approach. The intensive workshop will host 4 keynote lectures given by international experts addressing innovative design practices to face the climate crisis and addressing the crucial role of design.
The charrette will have a first phase of design-driven research, where through site visits, interviews, and research, the students will develop innovative design solutions. The second part of the week will be devoted to produce a schematic project that will be discussed with local stakeholders and international experts.
By the end of the international charrette, students will gain skills on sustainable climate design, developing a highly international and interdisciplinary approach.
