Description of the initiative

The aim of the initiative is to carry out a contest within the School of Design of the Politecnico di Milano for the elaboration of future scenarios for a service master plan to be implemented in the Tourist Port Carlo Riva of Rapallo, (an initiative commissioned by Bizzi & Partners).These scenarios, which should be innovative, impactful and sustainable from an environmental and social perspective, will have to be ideated and designed during a 5-day (non-consecutive) face-to-face workshop, involving researchers and teachers from Politecnico di Milano Design Department, a selection of students from the School of Design and some representatives of Bizzi & Partners, as experts and clients.
This is an application-based design contest: students will have to send their CVs and portfolios to be selected. Priority will be given in the first instance to students of Master's degrees, particularly in Product-Service System Design PSSD, Interior and Spatial Design and Naval and Nautical Design. The class will be international and the activities will be carried out in English. The selected students, during the workshop, will have to work to develop future scenarios for a service master plan for the Tourist Port Carlo Riva in Rapallo, the most important private Italian harbour of about 350 berths, damaged after a sea storm in 2018 and completely to be rebuilt, re-branded and managed. During the workshop a field activity in the Rapallo harbour is planned. At the end of the workshop a presentation will be organized to the client, Bizzi & Partners, who will award the best projects. The initiative will be carried out in the following stages:
  • Contest launch and selection of participants
  • Workshop, day 1: Idea generation
  • Workshop, days 2-3: Idea development and feasibility;
  • Workshop, day 4: Idea refinement and storytelling;
  • Workshop, day 5: Presentation to the company and awarding of best projects.
 The final result of the project will be a series of scenarios with both spatial and service elements of various types (mobility, food, entertainment, etc.)  that will be used to imagine the future of Rapallo Port.
