Description

The hybrid summer school on "AI in Construction and Project Management" offers a blend of theoretical and practical learning, covering AI fundamentals, applications in construction, data management, design, and facility management of building projects. After introductory sessions on various project management domains, participants will engage in hands-on exercises in project planning, risk management, cost estimation, quality control, safety, team management, energy performance analysis, and sustainability. At the end of some sessions, special guests from leading enterprises in the industry will deliver a lecture followed by a Q&A by the participants, to make the potential applications and advantages of AI methods more tangible. The broad team of lecturers from different locations in the world will enable the participants to make a comparison on the maturity level of AI application in different countries

Educational project

The construction industry is witnessing a major digitalization shift thanks to the AI advancements and Industry 4.0 revolution. However, the current workforce, specifically construction project managers, may not possess the necessary skills to fully exploit these technologies, which makes them resistant to the ongoing change. Furthermore, despite the growing interest in the theoretical facets of AI in Construction Project Management (CPM), there is a considerable gap in understanding its practical applications in real-world construction contexts. Another important hinder to fully integrating AI with CPM, is the not well-explored ethical and legal challenges posed by digital technologies, such as data privacy, model ownership and autonomy, decision transparency, and legal liability in AI-driven decision making. All these knowledge gaps are great areas to focus and solve by delivering high quality education and training to the scholars and professionals in the field. This proposal seeks to bridge these gaps through the establishment of a summer school program focusing on practical AI applications in CPM. Benefiting early-career researchers, PhD students, and practitioners in the field, this program will explore the intersection of AI, sustainability, and construction management in line with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
