The building process that has concerned the area around Via Bonardi from the post-war period onwards has generated an extensive overload of buildings without following any unified design and characterised by a scant environmental quality and an inadequate availability of spaces. Due to this, the University has embarked on a rearrangement and redevelopment intervention on the area with a view to enhancing the building quality and the functionality; the plan was to increase the open and study spaces available to students and improve the environmental quality through the creation of extensive green spaces.
Thanks to the generosity of the Alumni and the supporters of the Politecnico, in the months preceding the start of works as many as EUR 6-million have been collected through crowdfunding: an extraordinary result in a country like Italy where such a form of diffuse funding is not so widely practised.
The project
The new University Campus stems from an idea of Renzo Piano donated to Politecnico di Milano and from the enhancement and development of the original idea from the ODB-OTTAVIO DI BLASI & Partners studio. The project has proposed a wide-ranging rethinking of the Via Bonardi Campus spaces, modelled especially on students’ needs, making the campus open, international, a carrier of avant-garde ideas, and revolving around three pivotal aspects:
- the green: the new campus is characterised by a large quantity of trees and green spaces
- the relationship with the historic buildings, which has been respected, restoring their original appearance
- the accessible terraces: the roofs of the low buildings are susceptible of use for outdoor activities and events
The basement level, that of the Architecture patio, is the place experienced the most as aggregation centre. The idea thus arose of four new buildings at this level, sufficiently low to ensure the perfect visibility from the road of the pre-existing Giò Ponti buildings. The new buildings host a state-of-the-art architectural modelling lab, digital and design technologies, in addition to classrooms and supplementary study areas, for a total 4.200 square metres.
The old models lab, colloquially known as "Submarine", have been eliminated to make room for a new open space to be lived in an aggregative form: a wood of as many as 8.000 square metres, which links the Architecture patio directly with the "Trifoglio" ("Clover") and the “Nave” (“Ship”), in a continuum of open and closed spaces, where the roofs of the new buildings, too, are accessible, with the resultant elimination of cement and internal parking spaces.
Turning the cities into better places means opening up the environments, flooding them with lights, creating “urban life” places such as the new green space, shared with the city and open to all and sundry. The purposes of the project are accordingly:
- development of a green connective fabric capable of establishing relationships between old and new Campus buildings
- creation of a place of excellence consistently with the international ambitions of the Politecnico
- development of a Models Lab symbolising the University’s “know-how” capacity
- increased provision of study-spaces, teaching spaces and open spaces
- enhancement of the historic buildings found on campus
